A few days ago, I received a service job for an Advan I7A Android tablet with a unique problem: the Settings menu could not be accessed or opened at all. It was unclear what settings or mistakes the child user had made, but the Settings menu was completely unresponsive. This is a critical issue because without access to the Settings menu, the tablet's functionality becomes very limited.
First Attempt: Hard Reset (Did Not Work)
The first step I usually take to fix common tablet issues—such as boot loops, pattern locks, full memory, and other errors—is to perform a manual reset, commonly known as a hard reset. This involves using a combination of the Power and Volume UP/DOWN buttons to access the Recovery Mode menu, then performing a wipe of data and cache partitions.Usually, the hard reset method resolves most software errors on tablets. However, this was not the case here. Even after performing a hard reset, the Settings menu still could not be accessed at all.
The Settings icon (gear icon) was still visible on both the home screen and the quick settings panel, but tapping it did nothing. Under normal conditions, the Settings menu should open easily.
Second Solution: Reflash the Firmware
Since the first method failed, the second solution is to reflash the entire firmware (reinstall the operating system). What You Need to Prepare
To reflash the Advan I7A tablet, gather the following materials:- Advan I7A Firmware: The official or tested firmware file for this specific model.
- SP Flash Tool: Software used for flashing MediaTek (MTK) based devices.
- MTK USB Drivers: Must be installed on your computer for the device to be detected.
- USB Data Cable: A good quality cable to connect the tablet to your computer.
Important Tips for Downloading Firmware Safely
For those who are not yet familiar with flashing or want to learn to flash their own devices, here is an important tip when searching for and downloading firmware:- I recommend looking for firmware through YouTube channels.
- When you find a tutorial video that covers the flashing process for your specific device, check if the video description provides download links for the required files.
- Crucially, read the comments section of that video. If many comments state that the tutorial works and is safe, then the firmware provided is likely reliable and correct for your device.
- Conversely, if there are comments reporting problems after following the tutorial, it is best to ignore it and look for another source.
- This precaution helps avoid flashing failures due to incorrect firmware, which is extremely dangerous and can result in a permanently dead device ("bricked").
Step-by-Step Flashing Guide
Step 1: Prepare the Files & Software- Extract the downloaded firmware file to a folder on your computer.
- Open SP Flash Tool on your computer.
- In the "Scatter-Loading" menu, click the button and load the scatter file located inside the extracted firmware folder.
- In the "Download Agent" menu, ensure the option "MTK_AllInOne_DA.bin" is selected.
- Important Safety Step: Uncheck the "Preloader" option. This is to avoid hard-bricking your device in case the flashing fails or you use the wrong firmware. By unchecking Preloader, even if the system flash fails, the internal storage (MMC) will not crash, and the device can still be recovered.
- Click the "Download" button (green arrow) in SP Flash Tool to begin the flashing process.
- Make sure your Advan I7A tablet is turned OFF.
- Connect the tablet to your computer via a USB cable while simultaneously pressing and holding both the Volume UP and Volume DOWN buttons.
- The flashing process will start automatically once the device is detected by the system.
- Wait for the flashing process to finish. This may take more than 5 minutes.
- When completed successfully, a green checkmark dialog will appear in SP Flash Tool.

Step 5: Final Setup
- Once the flashing process is complete, disconnect the USB cable from the tablet.
- Power on the tablet normally.
- Follow the on-screen steps to set up the device as new.
- After setup is complete, your Advan I7A tablet will be back to normal, and the Settings menu will now be fully accessible again.
